WTF is wrong with boys?

How to make the gym an embodied practice

We can change the story

Support mental health and life purpose for young men through strength training.

We’re turning gyms into “dojos” where young men can develop discipline, find meaning and be less likely to fall victim to addiction, despair or suicide.

This is NOT okay

Sadly, poor mental health and feeling lost have become the norm for young men today.

Around three-quarters of young men privately report mental health issues, but less than half have ever talked about it. Only 9% have accessed help.*

Suicide is the now most common form of death among young men, addictions of all kinds are rising, and most men have little meaning or hope.

Young men are being driven to depths of despair like never before. People attack them as “toxic”, criticise them as “fragile” or say they lack discipline… all whilst not providing any real support. We’ve let them down.

NCHS, National Vital Statistics System, Mortality*

As a young man I was lucky enough to find martial arts and fitness. These were a life-saver for me! I got the discipline to graduate university, to get sober, and later to start a business. I was one of the fortunate ones.

I’ve always wanted to be the person for others, that I needed as a kid. I got this opportunity earlier this year when several friends asked me to take their sons to the gym. This went really well.

“Mark you massive legend. Thank you. W had an ace time today.”

When boys start going to the gym they feel good, they make friends, and they start sorting out their diets and their sleep. The gym is not just about muscles.

Most young men who need help don’t resonate with therapy. Instead, they end up listening to macho influencers or disappearing into porn, drugs and gaming. The gym is much more wholesome.

Strength training can be a:

I want to take what I’ve started in-person online to reach a million young men. Together we can help young men to make the gym their mental health and purpose “dojo” (practice space).

I’m confident that we can reach one million young men in a year. And on a personal level, we can also stop 100 young men from ending their own lives.

I have devoted my life to doing epic stuff to help people psychologically. I’ve trained some of the world’s best-known organisations (like Google, Shell, etc.), started a trauma charity in Ukraine that has reached 150,000 people, and created the world’s largest online summit, where 500,000 people attended.

The vision

I love working with young men in the gym, but to make a real difference, this needs to be bigger than me. We need to:

"Resilience, the value of consistency and a willingness to accept that results won’t always come fast were all valuable tools taught to me by weight-lifting in my teens. I love what Mark is doing with this project as I know it will help a lot of young guys"

Social media is big business these days, so to beat the more toxic influencers and reach 1 million young men, we need start-up funds.

With $10,000 we can provide free online resources for young men worldwide, including on YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and Substack. This is how we reach those men.

Various big-name guests have already agreed to come on the new podcast, including Mike Isratel, Zuby, Marcus Filly and Andrew Coates.

For another $20,000 we can also provide more personalised support, changing this from awareness to action, like:

After this initial fundraising, all of this will become self-supporting (like Sane Ukraine is), benefiting young men ongoing. We only need to start this off for it to continue for years.

What can you do?

So… do you wanna get involved and be a positive influence on a million young men?

If you’re short of funds, you can still change lives by sharing this project with parents, guardians and anyone else who cares about guys.

However, if you can, give us some cash.

It’s a no-brainer if you want some courses, coaching with me, and plenty more at a absolute bargain whilst supporting a good cause.

I needed this as a teenager. But just look around: the kids today desperately need this too.

So, how about we have 100 less suicides? AND how about 1 million strong healthy happy young men that are a force for good in the world?

Are you in? Let’s do this.

Mark Walsh

Mark Walsh is the Founder and CEO of Embodiment Unlimited, leading embodiment, coaching and trauma education trainings.

He is the author of EmbodimentWorking with the Body in Training and Coaching, and Embodied Meditation. Mark hosts The Embodiment Podcast (2 million+ downloads), and led The Embodiment Conference (1000 teachers, 500,000 delegates). Seeing a theme yet?

He founded the Embodied Facilitator Course, and the Certificate of Embodiment Coaching. Mark has certified over 2000 embodiment coaches, and taught workshops in over 40 countries.

He gained an honours degree in psychology (despite been an alcoholic at the time), and has taught widely in the corporate world – where he pretended to be a grown up for years – including with blue-chip companies (e.g. Google, Unilever, Shell, Axa, L’Oreal).

Mark has worked in war zones (including founding a trauma education charity in Ukraine), and entertained over 50,000 children. He has headlined International Coach Federation events, lived with the circus and in slums, taught celebrities, and kissed a princess.

Mark is an aikido black belt, and also has 28 years of experience in other martial arts, yoga, bodywork, improv comedy, conscious dance and meditation.

Embodiment is his obsession, life’s work, and frankly, at this point he couldn’t get a job doing anything else. He dances like your dad at a wedding, impresses cats with his stroking, and offends pirates with his swearing.

Mark’s now tired of writing in the third person. It’s getting weird.

As long as you stay subscribed to our emails, we’ll send occasional updates with how to project is going, along with sharing links to what we develop along the way.
