784. The art of embodied group facilitation – With Mark Walsh & Dr Helen Machen-Pearce

In this episode, I speak with Dr Helen Machen-Pearce about the art of embodied group facilitation and why working with a group requires a very different set of skills from one-to-one coaching. Drawing on years of experience facilitating groups, we explore what happens when the focus shifts from an individual client to the complex dynamics of an entire group, including the importance of reading the room, tracking the group nervous system, and adapting in real time.

Together, we examine the practical skills that distinguish effective group facilitation, from giving clear instructions and managing time to creating flow, setting boundaries, and ensuring that one participant doesn’t dominate the experience of everyone else. We discuss the challenge of balancing individual needs with the needs of the group, as well as the cultural differences that influence who speaks, who takes space, and how people participate. Mark shares lessons from facilitating groups of anything from a handful of people to hundreds, while Helen reflects on the subtle skills involved in sensing and responding to group dynamics.

The conversation also explores why group work can be such powerful training for coaches, developing skills in embodied leadership, intuition, regulation, and the ability to quickly sense what’s happening in a room. We discuss the value of coaches experiencing group facilitation themselves, why working with diverse groups accelerates learning, and the particular challenges of bringing embodied group work online. Whether you’re an experienced facilitator or a coach considering making the move into group work, this episode offers practical insights into how to create groups that are engaging, well-held, and genuinely transformative.
